We are excited to announce that both of our deacon candidates, Andrew Evans and Larry Wormald, were elected as Deacons of Redeemer at our congregational meeting on May 28th. Please plan to join us during middle hour on June 11th for the ordination and installation of our new Deacons. Andrew Evans

Andrew Evans currently lives in Anaheim with his wife, Kim, daughter Logan (2), and a new baby due to arrive in June. Andrew was born in Houston, TX, but has spent most of his life in Southern California between LA and Orange County. He currently runs a financial planning practice based in Irvine, CA.

Andrew was raised in a Christian home and was blessed to be surrounded by godly parents during his upbringing. As a young man, time at Biola University challenged Andrew to further understand and study the meaning of following Christ and what it means to be living in communion with Him. Redeemer has been an incredible blessing to his family and Andrew humbly looks forward to serving and loving the members of this community.

Larry Wormald

Larry Wormald lives in Irvine with his wife Binky and step daughter Kassandra. He has two grown sons, Ryan James and Christopher Steven. He was born in Pasadena and grew up in Laguna Beach. Larry spent twenty years in the Lake Arrowhead area working at a Christian retreat center and later moved to Orange County to work with Calvary Chapel facilities, serving as an HVAC tech and building maintenance.

He became a Christian when he was 18 years old. He started going to Redeemer around 2001. He has been actively involved in community groups, and was a community group leader in the South OC area. He is also a member of the sound team, working closely with elder Carl Messenger. Larry is looking forward to serving in the additional capacity of a deacon, to be able to help out the church and its members in a more personal way.

Daily Prayer

Easter2014-670x415-1.jpg

“The fullness of the resurrection requires more than a day to unpack. The Easter season is a fifty-day celebration that ends on Pentecost Sunday… The Easter season is a time to let the implications of the resurrection sink in deeper, inviting us to realign our worldview and conform our living to the reality that we have been raised with Christ to new life.” (From Seeking God’s Face by Philip Reinders).

One way to “let the implications of the resurrection sink in deeper” is to enter into a daily practice of praying and reading Scripture. To help assist you in this practice, we encourage you to sign up for Redeemer’s daily Morning and Evening Prayer emails. These emails include the Bible reading plan that is currently printed in the back our Order of Worship broken up into morning and evening readings, while also including several prayers and the liturgical drama taken from our previous Sunday morning worship services. There is also a section with suggestions for family devotions.

Setting aside time in your mornings and evenings where you can pause, rest, change gears, be reminded that God loves you, and meditate on God’s Word and pray it back to him may be hard at first (as with any practice), but over time is extremely formative and life giving.

The language in the prayers is corporate, letting you know that you are not praying or even reading the scripture passages alone, but are doing so together with your church community. The emails are created to encourage you to let your Sunday worship flow over into your daily practices. The beauty in how they are formatted is that they can be made more simple or complex as time allows.

Try starting this new habit to help deepen your joy in the resurrection. If you are interested in receiving these Morning and Evening Prayer emails

If you already have a regular daily habit of praying and reading scripture, that is wonderful and there is no pressure to change your practices. We are simply suggesting another tool for people to use.

Contact Kem Erskine, kem@redeemeroc.org, for assistance in signing up for the daily prayer email list.

Easter Helpers Needed

egg-hunt-post.jpg

Sunday, April 16, 8:20 am or 9:30 am

We are getting ready for our children’s Easter celebration on April 16th during the middle hour, from 10:00-11:00. We need helpers to hide the Easter eggs out on the lawn before the end of 1st service at 9:30 am. This should only take 15 minutes if we have enough hands. We will also need additional volunteers to help set up the craft and activity stations outside as well, prior to 1st service at 8:20 am.

If you are interested in helping with our Children’s Easter Celebration activities, contact our Children’s Ministry Director, Amanda Knox, amandak@redeemeroc.org.

2017 Maundy Thursday

homepage-bw-chalice-670x415.jpg

Thursday, April 13, 8:00 pm, Chapel at Temple Bat Yahm

Maundy Thursday is a beautiful and solemn service that will focus your mind and grip your heart. After singing, silence, and a short meditation on a passage of scripture, we take the Lord’s Supper, prayerfully and seated at tables. For many this is one of the most powerful and rich communion experiences. At the conclusion of the service the communion tables are ceremonially stripped and we leave in silence and darkness. Symbolically this darkness and silence is broken with the shout of “He is risen!” at the opening of our Easter worship the following Sunday.  Due to the late start time, there will be no childcare provided during the service.

Also join us for worship on Easter Sunday, April 16th. Service Times will be at 8:45am and 11am. Read More

Dr. Cox Marriage Lectures

Dr. John Cox, clinical psychologist, joined us on March 5th to speak on Finders/Keepers: Finding the Marriage you want, Keeping the Marriage you have.

About the Lectures

Our culture tells us that marriage is about finding the right person. The truth is, marriage is about being the right people with each other. In other words, doing marriage well requires us to have skills and abilities in our character, in our hearts, to love well. The problem is not that our spouse is “the bad guy.” The problem is that both of us lack some of the skills for being married.

In a morning lecture and afternoon seminar, Dr. Cox spoke about the heart abilities, skills and “software” that we need to make a romantic relationship work, sustain, and grow. Whether married and longing for more, or single and searching for a meaningful relationship, we looked at how we can grow more as a person to have a richer relationship.

Lecture Audio

If you were not able to attend the lectures or if you would like to listen again, see the links below to an audio of the morning lecture and afternoon seminar.

Morning Lecture: Growing Together not Growing Apart: How Your Growth as a Person can Enrich your Marriage (mp3)

Afternoon Seminar: Welcome to Fight Club: How Two People Can Still be One (mp3)

About the Speaker

Dr. John L. Cox is a clinical psychologist, and has been in practice at Live Oak Psychological Associates for 26 years. He received his B.A. in Psychology and English from Ole Miss, and a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Reformed Theological Seminary. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Rosemead School of Psychology in Los Angeles. Dr. Cox has been married for 33 years and has three grown children.

Daily Prayer Emails

page-header-daily-scripture-670x415-1.jpg

The season of Lent begins Wednesday, March 1. Lent is a season of preparation as we look ahead with anticipation to Jesus’ death and resurrection on Good Friday and Easter. During this season the Church throughout history has emphasized the daily practice of praying and reading Scripture. As you enter into this season, we would encourage you to do the same and to try create a daily habit of such a practice.

To help assist you and your family, we are excited to let you know that we have designed and created daily Morning and Evening Prayer emails. These emails include the Bible reading plan that is currently printed in the back our Order of Worship broken up into morning and evening readings, while also including several prayers and the liturgical drama taken from our previous Sunday morning worship services. There is also a section with suggestions for family devotions.

Setting aside time in your mornings and evenings where you can pause, rest, change gears, be reminded that God loves you, and meditate on God’s Word and pray it back to him may be hard at first (as with any practice), but overtime is extremely formative and life giving.

The language in the prayers are corporate, letting you know that you are not praying or even reading the scripture passages alone, but are doing so together with your church community. They also are created to encourage you to let your Sunday worship flow over into your daily practices. The beauty in how the emails are formatted is that it can be made more simple or complex as time allows.

For Lent (March 1 – April 15), try starting a new habit to help prepare you for the joy of Easter. If you are interested in receiving these Morning and Evening Prayer emails

If you already have a regular daily habit of praying and reading scripture, that is wonderful and there is no pressure to change your practices. We are simply suggesting another tool for people to use.

Prison Ministry Update

McCullough-Art-670x415.jpg

December is always a busy time for Redeemer’s Prison Ministry. Here are some ways Redeemer ministered to inmates across Orange County in December of 2016:

Bible Donations

“Free on the Inside” Bibles were donated to Lisa Cram with Prelude Foundation. These bibles go directly to incarcerated men and women who are taking Chaplain Cram’s Christian Life Skills course.

Angel Tree & Heart Cards

Our congregation ministered to 20 families in 2016, providing Angel Tree gifts to 36 children with an incarcerated parent. Redeemer has participated in this wonderful program for 9 years. The congregation also graciously sent Heart Cards to 12 inmates, offering hope, encouragement, and the love of Christ to these men. Included in the Heart Cards were hand-drawn personal cards made by Redeemer children!

Other Donations

Year-end financial donations were sent to Serving California and Prison University Project. Serving California is a faith-based, nonprofit organization committed to helping inmates re-enter into their communities. Prison University Project is a nonprofit which transforms the lives of inmates at San Quentin through higher education. Prison University Project was named a recipient of the 2016 National Humanities Medal. President Obama awarded the National Humanities Medal to Jody Lewen, Executive Director, at a White House ceremony last September.

Thank You

Our gifts of time, cards, bibles and other donations give hope and encouragement to men and women who desperately need the love of Christ. The cards pictured here were created by inmates and sent to their friends at Redeemer in response to this ministry.
