Pentecost

The word ‘Pentecost’ comes from the Greek meaning simply ‘fiftieth.’ Pentecost Sunday ends the season of Easter and symbolizes a new beginning. It celebrates the unleashing of the Holy Spirit on the world and the empowering of the church to reach the world with the gospel. In remembering Pentecost and living in light of this powerful turning point the church expresses gratitude to Christ for sending “another counselor” (John 14:16), celebrates the work of the Spirit in the renewal of all creation, and professes its confidence and security in knowing the Spirit’s power is available for its mission.

- Calling -

O Lord, open our lips.

And our mouth shall proclaim Your praise.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!

The earth is the Lord's for he made it:
O come, let us adore him.

- Constitution -

Read/Listen, Meditate, Pray, and Contemplate on God’s Word, remembering that God is with you and ready to speak to you because he loves you.

Praying the Psalms

Psalm 119:25–48

Daleth

[25] My soul clings to the dust;

give me life according to your word!

[26] When I told of my ways, you answered me;

teach me your statutes!

[27] Make me understand the way of your precepts,

and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

[28] My soul melts away for sorrow;

strengthen me according to your word!

[29] Put false ways far from me

and graciously teach me your law!

[30] I have chosen the way of faithfulness;

I set your rules before me.

[31] I cling to your testimonies, O LORD;

let me not be put to shame!

[32] I will run in the way of your commandments

when you enlarge my heart!

He

[33] Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes;

and I will keep it to the end.

[34] Give me understanding, that I may keep your law

and observe it with my whole heart.

[35] Lead me in the path of your commandments,

for I delight in it.

[36] Incline my heart to your testimonies,

and not to selfish gain!

[37] Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;

and give me life in your ways.

[38] Confirm to your servant your promise,

that you may be feared.

[39] Turn away the reproach that I dread,

for your rules are good.

[40] Behold, I long for your precepts;

in your righteousness give me life!

Waw

[41] Let your steadfast love come to me, O LORD,

your salvation according to your promise;

[42] then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me,

for I trust in your word.

[43] And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,

for my hope is in your rules.

[44] I will keep your law continually,

forever and ever,

[45] and I shall walk in a wide place,

for I have sought your precepts.

[46] I will also speak of your testimonies before kings

and shall not be put to shame,

[47] for I find my delight in your commandments,

which I love.

[48] I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love,

and I will meditate on your statutes.

Old Testament Reading

Jeremiah 8

[1] “At that time, declares the LORD, the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of its officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be brought out of their tombs. [2] And they shall be spread before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and served, which they have gone after, and which they have sought and worshiped. And they shall not be gathered or buried. They shall be as dung on the surface of the ground. [3] Death shall be preferred to life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family in all the places where I have driven them, declares the LORD of hosts.

[4] “You shall say to them, Thus says the LORD:

When men fall, do they not rise again?

If one turns away, does he not return?

[5] Why then has this people turned away

in perpetual backsliding?

They hold fast to deceit;

they refuse to return.

[6] I have paid attention and listened,

but they have not spoken rightly;

no man relents of his evil,

saying, ‘What have I done?’

Everyone turns to his own course,

like a horse plunging headlong into battle.

[7] Even the stork in the heavens

knows her times,

and the turtledove, swallow, and crane

keep the time of their coming,

but my people know not

the rules of the LORD.

[8] “How can you say, ‘We are wise,

and the law of the LORD is with us’?

But behold, the lying pen of the scribes

has made it into a lie.

[9] The wise men shall be put to shame;

they shall be dismayed and taken;

behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD,

so what wisdom is in them?

[10] Therefore I will give their wives to others

and their fields to conquerors,

because from the least to the greatest

everyone is greedy for unjust gain;

from prophet to priest,

everyone deals falsely.

[11] They have healed the wound of my people lightly,

saying, ‘Peace, peace,’

when there is no peace.

[12] Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?

No, they were not at all ashamed;

they did not know how to blush.

Therefore they shall fall among the fallen;

when I punish them, they shall be overthrown,

says the LORD.

[13] When I would gather them, declares the LORD,

there are no grapes on the vine,

nor figs on the fig tree;

even the leaves are withered,

and what I gave them has passed away from them.”

[14] Why do we sit still?

Gather together; let us go into the fortified cities

and perish there,

for the LORD our God has doomed us to perish

and has given us poisoned water to drink,

because we have sinned against the LORD.

[15] We looked for peace, but no good came;

for a time of healing, but behold, terror.

[16] “The snorting of their horses is heard from Dan;

at the sound of the neighing of their stallions

the whole land quakes.

They come and devour the land and all that fills it,

the city and those who dwell in it.

[17] For behold, I am sending among you serpents,

adders that cannot be charmed,

and they shall bite you,”

declares the LORD.

[18] My joy is gone; grief is upon me;

my heart is sick within me.

[19] Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people

from the length and breadth of the land:

“Is the LORD not in Zion?

Is her King not in her?”

“Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images

and with their foreign idols?”

[20] “The harvest is past, the summer is ended,

and we are not saved.”

[21] For the wound of the daughter of my people is my heart wounded;

I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me.

[22] Is there no balm in Gilead?

Is there no physician there?

Why then has the health of the daughter of my people

not been restored?

New Testament Reading

Matthew 22

[1] And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, [2] “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, [3] and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. [4] Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ [5] But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, [6] while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. [7] The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. [8] Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. [9] Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ [10] And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.

[11] “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. [12] And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. [13] Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ [14] For many are called, but few are chosen.”

[15] Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. [16] And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. [17] Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” [18] But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? [19] Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. [20] And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” [21] They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” [22] When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

[23] The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, [24] saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ [25] Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. [26] So too the second and third, down to the seventh. [27] After them all, the woman died. [28] In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

[29] But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. [30] For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. [31] And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: [32] ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” [33] And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

[34] But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. [35] And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. [36] “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” [37] And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. [38] This is the great and first commandment. [39] And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. [40] On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

[41] Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, [42] saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” [43] He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

[44] “‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at my right hand,

until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

[45] If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” [46] And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
