Advent

Hopeful waiting. Expectancy. Longing. Things are not right within us nor in the world around us, so we wait. We wait for the arrival of King Jesus. The word “advent” comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming” or “arrival.” During Advent we remember the first coming of Jesus and we long for his second coming. Robert Webber explains Advent as, “a corporate spiritual journey that calls for expectant waiting and readiness for the coming of the Christ. When the Church travels this journey and treats it as a discipline of life and prayer, the joy of Christmas is immeasurably intensified.”

as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!

Our King and Savior now draws near:
O come, let us adore him. Alleluia!

- Constitution -

Read/Listen, Meditate, Pray, and Contemplate on God’s Word, remembering that God is with you and ready to speak to you because he loves you.

Praying the Psalms

Psalm 78

A Maskil of Asaph.

[1] Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;

incline your ears to the words of my mouth!

[2] I will open my mouth in a parable;

I will utter dark sayings from of old,

[3] things that we have heard and known,

that our fathers have told us.

[4] We will not hide them from their children,

but tell to the coming generation

the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might,

and the wonders that he has done.

[5] He established a testimony in Jacob

and appointed a law in Israel,

which he commanded our fathers

to teach to their children,

[6] that the next generation might know them,

the children yet unborn,

and arise and tell them to their children,

[7] so that they should set their hope in God

and not forget the works of God,

but keep his commandments;

[8] and that they should not be like their fathers,

a stubborn and rebellious generation,

a generation whose heart was not steadfast,

whose spirit was not faithful to God.

[9] The Ephraimites, armed with the bow,

turned back on the day of battle.

[10] They did not keep God’s covenant,

but refused to walk according to his law.

[11] They forgot his works

and the wonders that he had shown them.

[12] In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders

in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.

[13] He divided the sea and let them pass through it,

and made the waters stand like a heap.

[14] In the daytime he led them with a cloud,

and all the night with a fiery light.

[15] He split rocks in the wilderness

and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.

[16] He made streams come out of the rock

and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

[17] Yet they sinned still more against him,

rebelling against the Most High in the desert.

[18] They tested God in their heart

by demanding the food they craved.

[19] They spoke against God, saying,

“Can God spread a table in the wilderness?

[20] He struck the rock so that water gushed out

and streams overflowed.

Can he also give bread

or provide meat for his people?”

[21] Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath;

a fire was kindled against Jacob;

his anger rose against Israel,

[22] because they did not believe in God

and did not trust his saving power.

[23] Yet he commanded the skies above

and opened the doors of heaven,

[24] and he rained down on them manna to eat

and gave them the grain of heaven.

[25] Man ate of the bread of the angels;

he sent them food in abundance.

[26] He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,

and by his power he led out the south wind;

[27] he rained meat on them like dust,

winged birds like the sand of the seas;

[28] he let them fall in the midst of their camp,

all around their dwellings.

[29] And they ate and were well filled,

for he gave them what they craved.

[30] But before they had satisfied their craving,

while the food was still in their mouths,

[31] the anger of God rose against them,

and he killed the strongest of them

and laid low the young men of Israel.

[32] In spite of all this, they still sinned;

despite his wonders, they did not believe.

[33] So he made their days vanish like a breath,

and their years in terror.

[34] When he killed them, they sought him;

they repented and sought God earnestly.

[35] They remembered that God was their rock,

the Most High God their redeemer.

[36] But they flattered him with their mouths;

they lied to him with their tongues.

[37] Their heart was not steadfast toward him;

they were not faithful to his covenant.

[38] Yet he, being compassionate,

atoned for their iniquity

and did not destroy them;

he restrained his anger often

and did not stir up all his wrath.

[39] He remembered that they were but flesh,

a wind that passes and comes not again.

[40] How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness

and grieved him in the desert!

[41] They tested God again and again

and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

[42] They did not remember his power

or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,

[43] when he performed his signs in Egypt

and his marvels in the fields of Zoan.

[44] He turned their rivers to blood,

so that they could not drink of their streams.

[45] He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them,

and frogs, which destroyed them.

[46] He gave their crops to the destroying locust

and the fruit of their labor to the locust.

[47] He destroyed their vines with hail

and their sycamores with frost.

[48] He gave over their cattle to the hail

and their flocks to thunderbolts.

[49] He let loose on them his burning anger,

wrath, indignation, and distress,

a company of destroying angels.

[50] He made a path for his anger;

he did not spare them from death,

but gave their lives over to the plague.

[51] He struck down every firstborn in Egypt,

the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.

[52] Then he led out his people like sheep

and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

[53] He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid,

but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

[54] And he brought them to his holy land,

to the mountain which his right hand had won.

[55] He drove out nations before them;

he apportioned them for a possession

and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

[56] Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God

and did not keep his testimonies,

[57] but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;

they twisted like a deceitful bow.

[58] For they provoked him to anger with their high places;

they moved him to jealousy with their idols.

[59] When God heard, he was full of wrath,

and he utterly rejected Israel.

[60] He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh,

the tent where he dwelt among mankind,

[61] and delivered his power to captivity,

his glory to the hand of the foe.

[62] He gave his people over to the sword

and vented his wrath on his heritage.

[63] Fire devoured their young men,

and their young women had no marriage song.

[64] Their priests fell by the sword,

and their widows made no lamentation.

[65] Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,

like a strong man shouting because of wine.

[66] And he put his adversaries to rout;

he put them to everlasting shame.

[67] He rejected the tent of Joseph;

he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,

[68] but he chose the tribe of Judah,

Mount Zion, which he loves.

[69] He built his sanctuary like the high heavens,

like the earth, which he has founded forever.

[70] He chose David his servant

and took him from the sheepfolds;

[71] from following the nursing ewes he brought him

to shepherd Jacob his people,

Israel his inheritance.

[72] With upright heart he shepherded them

and guided them with his skillful hand.

Psalm 79

A Psalm of Asaph.

[1] O God, the nations have come into your inheritance;

they have defiled your holy temple;

they have laid Jerusalem in ruins.

[2] They have given the bodies of your servants

to the birds of the heavens for food,

the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth.

[3] They have poured out their blood like water

all around Jerusalem,

and there was no one to bury them.

[4] We have become a taunt to our neighbors,

mocked and derided by those around us.

[5] How long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever?

Will your jealousy burn like fire?

[6] Pour out your anger on the nations

that do not know you,

and on the kingdoms

that do not call upon your name!

[7] For they have devoured Jacob

and laid waste his habitation.

[8] Do not remember against us our former iniquities;

let your compassion come speedily to meet us,

for we are brought very low.

[9] Help us, O God of our salvation,

for the glory of your name;

deliver us, and atone for our sins,

for your name’s sake!

[10] Why should the nations say,

“Where is their God?”

Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants

be known among the nations before our eyes!

[11] Let the groans of the prisoners come before you;

according to your great power, preserve those doomed to die!

[12] Return sevenfold into the lap of our neighbors

the taunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord!

[13] But we your people, the sheep of your pasture,

will give thanks to you forever;

from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

Old Testament Reading

2 Chronicles 9

[1] Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem to test him with hard questions, having a very great retinue and camels bearing spices and very much gold and precious stones. And when she came to Solomon, she told him all that was on her mind. [2] And Solomon answered all her questions. There was nothing hidden from Solomon that he could not explain to her. [3] And when the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, [4] the food of his table, the seating of his officials, and the attendance of his servants, and their clothing, his cupbearers, and their clothing, and his burnt offerings that he offered at the house of the LORD, there was no more breath in her.

[5] And she said to the king, “The report was true that I heard in my own land of your words and of your wisdom, [6] but I did not believe the reports until I came and my own eyes had seen it. And behold, half the greatness of your wisdom was not told me; you surpass the report that I heard. [7] Happy are your wives! Happy are these your servants, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! [8] Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and set you on his throne as king for the LORD your God! Because your God loved Israel and would establish them forever, he has made you king over them, that you may execute justice and righteousness.” [9] Then she gave the king 120 talents of gold, and a very great quantity of spices, and precious stones. There were no spices such as those that the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

[10] Moreover, the servants of Hiram and the servants of Solomon, who brought gold from Ophir, brought algum wood and precious stones. [11] And the king made from the algum wood supports for the house of the LORD and for the king’s house, lyres also and harps for the singers. There never was seen the like of them before in the land of Judah.

[12] And King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all that she desired, whatever she asked besides what she had brought to the king. So she turned and went back to her own land with her servants.

[13] Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold, [14] besides that which the explorers and merchants brought. And all the kings of Arabia and the governors of the land brought gold and silver to Solomon. [15] King Solomon made 200 large shields of beaten gold; 600 shekels of beaten gold went into each shield. [16] And he made 300 shields of beaten gold; 300 shekels of gold went into each shield; and the king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon. [17] The king also made a great ivory throne and overlaid it with pure gold. [18] The throne had six steps and a footstool of gold, which were attached to the throne, and on each side of the seat were armrests and two lions standing beside the armrests, [19] while twelve lions stood there, one on each end of a step on the six steps. Nothing like it was ever made for any kingdom. [20] All King Solomon’s drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were of pure gold. Silver was not considered as anything in the days of Solomon. [21] For the king’s ships went to Tarshish with the servants of Hiram. Once every three years the ships of Tarshish used to come bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.

[22] Thus King Solomon excelled all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom. [23] And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put into his mind. [24] Every one of them brought his present, articles of silver and of gold, garments, myrrh, spices, horses, and mules, so much year by year. [25] And Solomon had 4,000 stalls for horses and chariots, and 12,000 horsemen, whom he stationed in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. [26] And he ruled over all the kings from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt. [27] And the king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stone, and he made cedar as plentiful as the sycamore of the Shephelah. [28] And horses were imported for Solomon from Egypt and from all lands.

[29] Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, from first to last, are they not written in the history of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo the seer concerning Jeroboam the son of Nebat? [30] Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. [31] And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father, and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.

New Testament Reading

Jude

[1] Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James,

To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:

[2] May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

[3] Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. [4] For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

[5] Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. [6] And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day—[7] just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

[8] Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones. [9] But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” [10] But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. [11] Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion. [12] These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; [13] wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.

[14] It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, [15] to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” [16] These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.

[17] But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. [18] They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” [19] It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. [20] But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, [21] keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. [22] And have mercy on those who doubt; [23] save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

[24] Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, [25] to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
