Sabbatical Message from Pastor Adam

Dear Redeemer family,our-leaders-adam-feichtmann Next week, David Juelfs, our beloved Senior Pastor, will begin his three-month sabbatical from seven years of pastoral ministry. His sabbatical will begin May 17th and continue through August 15th. In light of Pastor David’s upcoming sabbatical, here is the million dollar question for the rest of us:

“What are we going to do while he is away?”

Here are some suggested ways that we as a congregation can prepare for this sabbatical - mind, heart, body, and spirit - in order to receive all the enrichment and blessing God intends for us during this season.

Scripture

I encourage you to take some time one of these Sundays to read and meditate upon the rhythms of rest and work in your own life and consider the potential a weekly Sabbath has to enhance your quality of life and relationships with God and others. Jesus reminded us that “the Sabbath was made for man” (Mk 2), and Scripture tells us that there are many benefits for God’s people in keeping the Sabbath and entering into seasons of sabbatical. The Church’s beliefs and practices concerning the rest, delight, blessing, healing, holiness, and mercy of the Sabbath are rooted in:

  • Creation (Gen 2; Ex 20)
  • Israel (Ex 16, 20; Lev 25; Num 15; Dt 5; Is 58; Jer 17; Neh 10)
  • Jesus (Mt 11, 12; Mk 2; Lk 4; Jn 5)
  • Church (Jn 20; Acts 20; 1 Cor 16; Rev 1)
  • New Creation (Heb 4; Rev 21-22)

Prayer

Prayer serves as an invitation for us to use this season of sabbatical to ask God to reveal himself as wholly present to us and to bestow good things on us. So would you consider praying for this sabbatical season on specific days and times? Perhaps you could spend five minutes a few times a week using the Lord’s Prayer as a guide (see HERE).  Our prayers could be a significant factor in the quality of this sabbatical both for the Juelfs family and for Redeemer.

Relationship with David

A sabbatical needs to be away from the day-to-day life of the church. For a person whose whole life and career is about encouraging, challenging, and caring for others, the lines between work and friendship are blurry. Calls, e-mails, text messages, and visits from the congregation, though well-intentioned, can distract or drain the pastor and interfere with “the work of rest.”

That said, we need to give the Juelfs family space and let them disengage from Redeemer relationships for a while. If they need us, the ball is in their court to make the call, send the email, or show up on our doorsteps.

Sunday Worship

We are so blessed to have skilled pastors in our area who are able to help shoulder the load for Sunday preaching during the sabbatical so that I am not bearing it alone. Praise God for that! We are also blessed to have our Redeemer Elders who are also equipped to help lead us through portions of the liturgy.

Click HERE for information on our Summer Preaching Series. We are excited to host some great preachers who will beautifully exposit God’s Word to us this summer. We are very privileged to kick off this summer series with Rev. Dr. Jim Belcher, Redeemer’s founding pastor, on Sunday May 17th! Save the card for yourself, or better yet, give it to a friend or co-worker as an invitation to visit Redeemer this summer.

For the service itself to run smoothly we are working hard to make sure all of our Sunday morning ministry teams are functioning in a healthy manner. If you are currently serving as a housekeeping helper, on the sound team, or in the Children’s and Youth Ministries, your continued faithful service would be much appreciated. If you are interested in serving in any of these roles, please contact Kem Erskine, kem@redeemeroc.org.

Welcoming Newcomers

We typically have a significant number of visitors during the summer, and it will be important not to rely solely on our leaders and the Welcome Team to be on the lookout for newcomers. Instead, we will need everyone who calls Redeemer home to practice hospitality. You can do that by simply sitting somewhere different during a worship service, finding someone new and introducing yourself, inviting them to lunch or to a meal in your home, and then following up with them in the subsequent weeks and inviting them to something social.

Congregational Care

Over the summer our Session is dedicated to continue making sure that pastoral/shepherding care is at the forefront of their list. Our Deacons are also here to serve any congregational needs that arise. Redeemer is additionally blessed to have lay leaders including the Women’s Ministry team, Parish Chairmen, and your Community Group leaders to provide support and prayer for our church body. These are respected, safe, and trustworthy leaders. If you need any immediate assistance or care with challenges that may arise know that you have committed elders, deacons, leaders, and a pastor who are available to help and love you in your specific situation.

Know also that congregational care is not just from the leaders. As Redeemer members, we are able to mutually care, encourage, admonish, and love one another as needed. Let this summer be a season for us to intentionally reach out to one another. Have coffee with a friend, invite someone over for a BBQ, meet to pray and study the Scriptures with each other, and look out for opportunities to lovingly serve someone in an area where help would be appreciated.

I am humbled by and grateful for the opportunity to serve Pastor David and to serve Redeemer during this sabbatical. I invite you to pray with us that the Juelfs family would return from their sabbatical more refreshed than they could hope for and that they would return to find Redeemer more alive and flourishing than they could imagine.

With love,

Pastor Adam

North County Parish Serving Opportunity

Saturday, May 9, 8am - 12pm, Fullerton Those who participated in LOVE FULLERTON last year may remember it as a wonderful community service opportunity. Contact Drew Duncan, aduncan@waxie.com with questions about how to get involved.

Sabbatical Letter from Pastor David

Dear Redeemer family,our-leaders-david-juelfs-2014 A sabbatical is a magnificent gift of loving support. Heather and I are grateful. We are also thankful for our denomination that encourages churches to send their pastors on sabbaticals as a regular practice to sustain and deepen a lifetime of pastoral ministry. Thank you.

My hope is that my sabbatical will be a journey into beauty. My sabbatical will center on spiritual formation, deepening my own and increasing my skill in facilitating it in others. The jumping off point of my study will be the work of Jonathan Edwards. Edwards scholar Kyle Strobel explains that,

“Ultimately Edwards’ grasp of spiritual formation centers on the idea that God is beautiful and glorious, and he calls us to share in that beauty and glory. In Edwards, we find a vision of the Christian life that is deeply spiritual, beautiful and humanizing. It is a vision of losing one’s life to find it in Christ. It is a vision of the human heart captivated by God” (Stroble, Formed for the Glory of God, 15).

I plan to read widely regarding spiritual formation starting within the reformed tradition with Edwards, Calvin, and the Puritans, but also much outside our tradition from the ancient church to contemporary authors. However, my sabbatical will not be simply a time of study, but a time to engage new practices of spiritual formation, and most importantly a time of restful and lingering communion with God. I will be working with three experienced pastors and mentors with different expertise who will provide ongoing guidance and support.

For the last weeks of the sabbatical I will travel to Austin, TX, with my family to worship with and study two churches, All Saints and Redeemer. Both churches are in our denomination and follow a similar liturgy to our church, but with distinct musical styles, one leaning towards folk and bluegrass and the other classical baroque. I will meet with their music directors and pastors to explore their approach to liturgy, musical style, and how their worship aids the spiritual formation of their congregations.

My last Sunday at Redeemer will be May 10th and my last day in the office will be May 15th. I will be back in the office the week of August 17th with my first Sunday leading worship August 23rd and my first Sunday preaching September 6th. In the coming weeks you will receive another letter from Pastor Adam describing some of the plans for while I am gone including the preaching schedule.

When I come back to Redeemer in August I hope to return refreshed, and with experiences and knowledge that will increase my ability to lead us into a season of increased spiritual growth as we follow Christ in the renewal of all things.

I am so thankful for your support and prayers during this important time for my family and me. We are blessed.

Grateful,

David Juelfs Pastor

Pastoral Assistant for Youth Ministry Hired

Our youth ministry at Redeemer continues to build momentum. A growing number of our sons and daughters are becoming teenagers and inviting their friends to our weekly youth gatherings. The teenage years are critical ones and Redeemer desires to walk alongside our families in order help students continue to follow Christ in this pivotal life stage. In this exciting time for Redeemer, the Session has decided to hire Josh Cooper as our part-time Pastoral Assistant for Youth Ministry. Josh has already been a dedicated volunteer leader of our youth for over two years, while also completing some seminary classes. He is well loved by our students, respected by our parents, and a great ministry support to Pastor David and me. We are looking forward to Josh being able to invest more deeply each week to provide intentional pastoral care for our students, while also dedicating more time in our Sunday morning youth workshop, Thursday evening youth community group, and all of our special youth gatherings and trips.

Be encouraged in what is happening with our youth ministry. Our student numbers are growing, we now have a dedicated youth ministry staff member with the addition of Josh, and the number of our adult volunteers is also increasing. As this vibrant ministry continues to develop, I will continue regularly training this new team of leaders, overseeing Josh’s service, and administratively guiding the ministry as a whole.

Welcome to Redeemer Lunch

Sunday, April 26, 12-2pm Newcomers to Redeemer are invited to lunch on Sunday, April 26th. Whether this is your first Sunday at Redeemer or you have been coming for several months, we would love for you to join us. Bring your family and enjoy lunch and a time to get to know our Redeemer pastors and learn more about Redeemer church. The lunch will be at the home of Bob & Karen Norling in Costa Mesa. Easter Worship Service

Sunday, April 5, 10:00 am, Chapel at Temple Bat Yahm Have you ever seen a sunrise? The darkness of night chased away by explosions of color. Easter is a celebration where the darkness of death is chased away by the bursting forth of new life.

Our Easter worship service is a rich celebration of joy and hope for the future. We follow a thoughtful yet energetic rhythm in our worship, which is called a liturgy. We sing together, we recite together, and we pray together. The service culminates in the Eucharist. We have nursery care for infants through three-year-olds during the entire worship service, and special worship and teaching for kids up to 5th grade during the sermon.

Join us Easter Sunday, April 5th at 10am.

If you are new to Redeemer, see our Guide to Your First Visit.

Maundy Thursday Service

Thursday, April 2, 8:00 pm, Chapel at Temple Bat Yahm Maundy Thursday is a beautiful and solemn service that will focus your mind and grip your heart. After singing, silence, and a short meditation on a passage of scripture, we take the Lord’s Supper, prayerfully and seated at tables. For many this is one of the most powerful and rich communion experiences. At the conclusion of the service the communion tables are ceremonially stripped and we leave in silence and darkness. Symbolically this darkness and silence is broken with the shout of “He is risen!” at the opening of our Easter worship the following Sunday.  Due to the late start time, there will be no childcare provided during the service.

Also join us for our Easter worship service on April 5th at 10am. Read More

For The Life of the World: Letters to the Exiles

Teachers: Pastor David Juelfs & Friends Location: MPR Area, Room 9

For the Life of the World is an entertaining film series that explores the deeper meaning of Salvation. Have you ever wondered, “What is my Salvation actually FOR?” Is it only about personal atonement, about getting to heaven, or something that comes later? Is it just to have a “friend in Jesus?”

Join Evan Koons and his friends - Stephen Grabill, Amy Sherman, Anthony Bradley, Makoto Fujimura, John M. Perkins, Tim Royer and Dwight Gibson – as they discover a “new perspective,” the BIGGER picture of what it means to be “in the world, not of it.” This seven-part film series and companion Field Guide will help you, your friends, and church investigate God’s Economy of All Things.

To learn more, see the video above or go to  www.letterstotheexiles.com.

We will also be offering classes for our youth and children. Read More
